Initially published as Trollkarlens hatt (The Hobgoblin’s Hat), the title was changed when it was chosen by the UK publisher Ernest Benn to introduce the series.

The book was first published in Swedish as Trollkarlens hatt in 1948 and was translated into English in 1950 (UK). The book was also published as The Happy Moomins in 1951 (US).
