Sun City
1976 (Originally published in 1974)
People are so peculiar, and getting older doesn’t make them any better.
Tove Jansson
Sun City is one of Tove Jansson’s lesser-known adult novels. At the Butler Arms guest house in the perfectly quiet town of St. Petersburg, Florida, some retirees live a science fiction-like existence together. Their story is about growing old, but even more so about the importance of first becoming yourself. The novel is also a satire on America and how it treats old people.
The book was first published in Swedish as Solstaden in 1974 and was translated into English in 1976.
